AI Act Monitor
First AI Act quality management standard has been published
Providers now have a concrete European standard for structuring their quality management system for high-risk AI.
Source facts
What officially changed?
EN 18286:2026 has been published as a European quality management system standard for regulatory purposes under the AI Act. NEN has adopted the standard nationally.
Legal effect
Publication by CEN-CENELEC or NEN does not yet provide a presumption of conformity. That arises only after the reference of a harmonised standard is cited in the Official Journal of the EU.
What the status means
The standard has been published. That does not automatically mean it has been cited as a harmonised standard in the Official Journal.
Analysis by Responsible AI Platform
Why is this material?
Providers now have a concrete European standard for structuring their quality management system for high-risk AI.
What does this mean in practice?
The standard can structure policy, lifecycle management, documentation and monitoring. It does not yet provide automatic legal cover, and standardisation work on the other areas continues.
What may need to be reassessed?
- Compare the existing quality management system with EN 18286:2026.
- Record which parts are already applied and where gaps remain.
- Do not claim harmonised status or a presumption of conformity while the EU citation is absent.
- Continue monitoring the Official Journal status and the other standards in the standardisation request.
